    • Quantum Computing: is a type of computation that uses quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to solve certain complex problems much more efficiently than classical computers.
    • Encryption: the process of converting plaintext into an unreadable format (ciphertext) for secure communication over networks. VPNs use encryption techniques to create a secure tunnel between devices and networks.

    “Classical encryption methods, like RSA and AES, are vulnerable to attacks from quantum computers,” explained Dr. Prescod.

    The Impact on VPNs

    If quantum computers can crack current encryption methods, it could lead to a significant blow for the security provided by VPNs. This means that users may no longer be able to rely on VPNs for anonymous browsing, accessing geo-restricted content, or protecting themselves from cyber threats.

    “The development of quantum-resistant encryption methods is crucial if we want to maintain secure online communication in the era of quantum computing,” said Dr. Prescod.
