The Wealth Gap on Weibo: Censoring the “Rich and Famous.”
In China’s thriving social media landscape, the popular microblogging site Weibo has become a battleground for discussions about wealth and inequality. However, recent reports suggest that the platform is censoring content related to the ‘rich and famous,’ raising concerns about freedom of speech.
“Weibo’s censorship policies have been accused of silencing voices that criticize China’s wealthy elite,” said Xiao Qiang, director of the Berkeley Center for Chinese Studies, in an interview with South China Morning Post.
Censored Content
Several high-profile cases have emerged where content critical of the wealthy was swiftly removed. For instance, a post by famous singer Kris Wu asking for donations to help those affected by flooding was taken down within hours, despite raising millions in funds.
“This is just another example of Weibo’s biased treatment towards the rich and powerful,” commented a Weibo user named Li Ming, in a Reuters article.
Challenging the Status Quo
Despite these challenges, some users continue to push boundaries and challenge Weibo’s censorship policies. For example, the hashtag #IwantFairWeibo (#我想公平微博) gained popularity in late 2019, calling for transparency and accountability from the platform.
“It’s time for Weibo to address its biases and ensure that all voices are heard,” said another Weibo user named Zhang Yan, in an interview with Global Voices.
